Just how great are these old tercel sr5 wagons? That and an amc eagle wagon are my two main contenders for second car, but I wanted to hear from OPPOs that have owned one. I’ve heard the tcase is kinda weak, which is my main concern, would I blow it up on surfaces that are only slightly slippery? The tercel is way cooler, especially with the plaid and inclinometer, but I’ve read there’s not much in the way of easy upgrades/mods out there, whereas the amc has the benefit of jeep fanbois (pronounced FAN-bwah). Either way, I don’t want to put my NC through another winter, and could use something bigger on occasion.

If you can stomach the massive power output of the 3A-C, it’s the greatest car in the world. But they are prone to rust of course. Never heard of many problems with theT-case myself. The plaid interior seals the deal for me.

Haha are they really that slow? I owned a festiva and could live with that, but that was in low flat IL and now I’m in high alt mountainy CO. At least rust isn’t as much of an issue here. I’ve just read that they can’t really take any more power before the trans or tcase goes, whereas the eagle has infinite possibilities.

I never saw them as slow, I felt it had just the right horsepower for what it was. Feels much faster than it is. But I’m a 4-cylinder junkie.
Also if I may: as I’ve said before, unless you’re handy or know a guy who knows a guy, do NOT get an project tercel 4x4. Find one that is mechanically sound from the get go. Working on them is easy, but part availability is poor, and is often not worth throwing money at a lower quality example.

It's funny you say that..... That's exactly what I'm looking for, a project with a good body. I just started an apprenticeship as a mechanic and want something I can tinker on on my own, but parts availability is definitely a consideration.

How far are you from Ottawa? This baby is only $2,000 CAD.

Hi Khalball, as the good Dr Z says, these are stout little cars. a few people have put 4age engines in but an easier upgrade is a 4ac. We have a large community of 1,000 member at Tercel4wd dot com if you want to search for ‘FAQ for 4wd tercels and this site’ to give you a start. goodluck! they are a fun and easy car to work on.

Awesome good to hear. I was made to understand they couldn't really take much more power.

It’s not a major issue in normal driving but of all the things the transmission is the weak point and probably shouldn’t deal with much more than 120hp with gentle use. unfortunately the transmission is the only part that is unique to these cars. They are often not maintained that well (how often do people check their transmission oil?) we recommend a good flush and a Gl5 synth treatment. The transmission ratio changed around ‘85 and needs the same ratio in the rear diff for 4wd. so if needing to change gearboxes be aware. basically we are trying to save all the gearboxes now and some forum members are looking at getting some syncros manufactured.
